Priority Queuing for IP-Based Service Differentiation in the UMTS Radio Access Network

چکیده
In this work, we investigate service differentiation under IP for the transport of both real-time and non real-time user traffic in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Therein, stringent delay bounds are to be met for both types of traffic, albeit tighter for the voice traffic. For the sake of simplicity, we suggest, model and analyze the use of priority queuing, as an efficient way to implement service differentiation. Our results are validated empirically on a test-bed emulating the UTRAN transport functionalities. This is carried out following a mean value as well as a percentile analysis. Based on these results, we draw the proper dimensioning of the UTRAN so as to meet the target QoS requirements.

Delay in UMTS Radio Access Networks: Analytical Study and Validation
This paper deals with the delay analysis of the traffic within the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Delay is a very important Quality of Service aspect in the UTRAN. Especially, the delay over the Iub link is the major limited factor for the dimensioning of the UTRAN. Based on the system analysis, a queuing model is proposed in this paper to derive the delay time over the Iub inte...

INTRODUCTION In this sense, the MIND network is comparable to the combination of a radio access network and mobile core network packet domain. For the end-user, the MIND network can therefore provide UMTS services in the same way as is currently being considered for WLANs (e.g. Findlay et al (3)), either basic Internet access or services from the Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). With the fi...

3G Radio Access Networks (RANs) generally have to transport traffic with a variety of heterogeneous Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In today’s 3G RANs, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology is used to provide the desired QoS. However, packet based RANs have been subject to recent standardization. In this case, Differentiated Services can be deployed to offer the required QoS using ...

The next generation access networks in UMTS and CDMA networks are expected to be IP-based Radio Access Networks (RAN). There are several benefits of IP-based RAN including lower costs, flexibility of merging wired and wireless networks, network scalability and reliability. In addition to the quality of service issues in IP-based RAN, the issue of connectivity and assignment of calls to radio ne...

The standardization of the first releases of third-generation cellular systems was finalized in ETSI/3GPP Release 99. Two major systems in this standard are the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and the global system for mobile communication/enhanced data rates for global evolution (GSM/EDGE). UMTS has been tailored to offer thirdgeneration services—that is, high user data rates...
